In the co-main event bout at UFC 146, Cain Velasquez brutalized Antonio Silva on his way to a first-round TKO victory. The bout, one of the bloodiest in recent memory, was mercifully stopped at the 3:36 mark. Velasquez was able to trip Bigfoot to the mat less than 10 seconds into the bout and opened up a big cut with an elbow not long after. Silva was unable to see due to all the blood and ate a ton of damaging strikes from Velasquez while basically blinded.
The referee finally got a doctor to check the cut after a couple of minutes, but he deemed Silva okay to continue. After a restart on the mat it was more of the same, and once Silva finally turtled up and ate shots without any real response, it was nighty night. Just look at that picture of Velasquez attached to this recap. None of that was his blood.
What was the high spot of this fight?
For me, it was the super-quick takedown from catching a kick. That was very smooth. The rest of the fight was a horror movie.
Where do these guys go from here?
Velasquez knows where he’s going next – straight into a UFC heavyweight title rematch with current champ Junior dos Santos. JDS knocked him out in just over a minute in November, but Dana White believes that this win over Silva was enough for Velasquez to get another crack at him. There’s no timeline for when that might happen as of now.
Bigfoot was brutally destroyed in his UFC debut, which is never a good thing. He’s still a top fighter, but he was in over his head with the former champion. A bout with Brendan Schaub would be entertaining.
Watch it now, later or never?
Now, as long as you don’t mind blood. If you’re touchy about these sorts of things you might want to give it a pass.
