The theme of brotherly love continues on this year’s report as Brazil’s Ildemar Alcantara (12-5), the brother of UFC veteran Yuri Alcantara, claims his spot at #5 on the 2012 World MMA Middleweight Scouting Report. The 29-year-old is currently riding a three-fight win streak, besting Richard Smith, Willians Santos, and Giovanni Francisco in the latter half of 2011 to place himself in the running for a shot at the Jungle Fight middleweight crown.
While the Jungle Fight strap usually garners interest from the UFC, Alcantara may not need it. In his last 8 appearances, he’s accumulated a 7-1 record, only losing to current Jungle Fight middleweight champion Marcelo Guimaraes via unanimous decision at Jungle Fight 28 in May. Guimaraes used a strong takedown game and excellent top control to dominate Alcantara on the scorecards.
Luckily, that seems to be the only major flaw in Alcantara’s skill-set. On the feet, he employs a typical sprawl and brawl style, boxing opponents up with a polished counter-punching attack while evading advances toward the ground. The southpaw Muay Thai specialist is by no means one-dimensional, however. He still possesses the grappling chops to reverse positions and control the action from the top.
The question is whether he’s good enough on the ground to compete with the power wrestlers that await him stateside. At this point, he may be in over his head. If he didn’t think he was already, Guimaraes certainly proved it could be an issue, and I fully expect his camp to work out the kinks with him. With improvements, it’s difficult to look past Alcantara as a tailor-made prospect for the ranks of the UFC.
