Brock Lesnar entered the world of MMA following a failed attempt at making the Minnesota Vikings. He immediately made an impact becoming the UFC heavyweight champion in just his third appearance in the UFC and defended his belt twice against Frank Mir and Shane Carwin. Lesnar’s time on top was cut short following a knockout loss to then undefeated Cain Velasquez. Several bouts with diverticulitis kept the former NCAA champion out of the cage for a year before his appearance at UFC 141 on Friday night. Facing Alistair Overeem, Lesnar was fighting for a shot to reclaim UFC gold. It took Overeem just 2:26 to put an end to that dream.
In the post fight interview with Joe Rogan, Brock Lesnar called it a career.
My hat’s off to Alistair Overeem. I want to take my hat off to all my training partners, my wife, my family. I’ve had a really difficult couple of years with my disease and uh…I’m gonna officially say that tonight will be the last time you’ll see me in the octagon.
…
I wanna thank everybody. I wanna thank the Fertitas, Dana White. Brock Lesnar is officially retired. I promised my wife and my kids…if I won this fight I would get a title shot and that would have been my last one but if I lost tonight…everyone you’ve been great. Alistair, it’s been a pleasure.
Lesnar’s MMA career will be remembered as a hulking man who came in with limited experience and a desire to be the best. His rise and fall shall be considered on the biggest stories in 2011. He didn’t mention any future plans.
