Last night saw Amir Khan take on Lamont Peterson in Washington D.C. on HBO Championship Boxing. Khan entered the bout as one of boxing’s biggest stars and was a huge favorite to retain his 140 pound title before a planned jump to 147 pounds. Bouts with Timothy Bradley and Floyd Mayweather were being talked about for Khan once the seeming formality of beating Peterson was taken care of.
Instead, Peterson turned it into a fight and was able to hit Khan clean with repeated success. Even though he was down in the first round, Peterson came back strong and turned what was expected to be a blowout into a late fight of the year contender.

Khan would be deducted two points somewhat controversially for using his forearm to push off. The ref warned him multiple times but Khan continued to do it which resulted in a first deduction. Khan continued to push off which led to a second point deduction in the final round.
In the end Peterson took a very narrow split decision which sets up a rematch with Khan claiming that it was home cooking for Lamont.
