Scott Coker talked today on the media call for Melendez vs. Masvidal about Strikeforce’s future on Showtime. While he said that there was nothing to announce in terms of a new deal, he did seem to suggest that things were progressing well and his tone suggested that the promotion had a future on the network.
He also said that they hope to conclude the heavyweight Grand Prix in March if Daniel Cormier has fully recovered from his broken hand.
In expanding upon the Showtime situation, Coker said:
In the history of Strikeforce since the relationship with Showtime was developed, we put on, I think some of the best fights in the history of MMA.
…
We’ve done our part to grow the sport, and that’s going to continue. There’s still a lot of great fighters on the roster. And we’re going to keep building these fighters. We’re going to continue putting on great fights. To me, that’s not going to change. So everybody can tune into Showtime and watch in 2012, and we’re going to put on some amazing, amazing fights.
It sounds like things are still positive with the Showtime/Strikeforce relationship even with the changes at the top of Showtime Sports, but until the deal is signed and announced it’s hard to say with any certainty what the future looks like.
