UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III – Live Results and Play-by-Play for Facebook Fights

As with every major show, Bloody Elbow will be here to bring you live results, play by play and commentary for UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Facebook prelim stream (currently scheduled for 5:45 p.m. ET), continuing through the Spike TV prelim broadcast (8 p.m. ET) and finally through the pay-per-view broadcast (9 p.m. ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

This post will cover the live results and thoughts on the Facebook preliminary stream.

Before getting to the huge main card with two title bouts including Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian and Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard there will be four fights show on Facebook. The featured webstream bout sees Stipe Miocic take on Joey Beltran in a heavyweight clash. Zhang Tie Quan meets Darren Elkins, Aaron Simpson squares off with Eric Schafer and former WEC light heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell faces Mike Massenzio.

The Facebook stream has started.

Steve Cantwell vs. Mike Massenzio – Round 1 – Both men feeling out with the jab early. Leg kick by Massenzio is the first strike to really land. Cantwell with a front kick to the face that gets blocked and he lands a few to the body now. Massenzio comes foward with a combination. Cantwell with a one-two and then he avoids a takedown from Massenzio. Nice overhand right by Cantwell lands. Huge right hand by Cantwell buckles Mike’s legs and Cantwell is following up with big strikes now. Massenzio surviving but he’s getting hit as Cantwell figures out the distance. Accidental low blow by Massenzio and there’s a brief break in the action for him to recover. Nice combo by Cantwell and an elbow. Massenzio shoots and Cantwell stuffs it very well. Left hand by Massenzio. 10-9 round for Cantwell.

Round 2– Head kick by Cantwell lands and Massenzio throws one in return that gets blocked. Massenzio attacks now and looks for a double leg. Cantwell drilling him with punches to the body now. Massenzio can’t finish the takedown and they’re back to standing. Massenzio with an overhand left. Overhand left by Massenzio lands hard and he is having a much better round than the first. Left hand again, and another and he has found a hole in Cantwell’s defense. Big uppercut by Massenzio and Cantwell just looks bad this round. Massenzio uses a flurry to try for a takedown again and can’t get it again. Massenzio really drilling Cantwell now and he has him bleeding badly. Cantwell kneeing to the body. Both men land hard punches. 10-9 round for Massenzio.

Round 3 – Uppercut lands for Massenzio and he is throwing with some bad intentions. Massenzio looking for a takedown against the cage now. Cantwell with two punches and Massenzio comes forward landing the left hand again. Massenzio looking for a takedown and Cantwell working over the body. Big punches for Massenzio an he’s back to pushing for the takedown. Cantwell tries for a kimura and gives up the takedown. Cantwell looks for an armbar and they end up standing. Left hand by Massenzio. Massenzio keeps landing the straight left while Cantwell is just pawing now. Big shots by Massenzio and Cantwell is hurt. He tries to follow up and Cantwell with a knee to the body and one to the head. Nice shots by Massenzio again. Cantwell is exhausted, bloody and has been ineffective for two rounds now. The round ends with Cantwell looking to lock in a deep kneebar. 10-9 Massenzio gives him the 29-28 win on my card.

Official Scorecards: 29-28 across the board. Mike Massenzio wins by unanimous decision. 

Aaron Simpson vs. Eric Schafer – Round 1 – Simpson comes out and lands a big flurry and Schafer crumbles. Schafer is able to try for the takedown and sit on his back causing simpson to back off and make him get back up. Simpson landing more big punches and Schafer is just desperately trying to find a way to get it to the ground. Simpson continuing to keep it standing and he is busting Schafer up this round. 10-8 round in my book. Schafer got dropped and basically had zero offense.

Round 2 – Huge overhand right by Simpson just misses. Left hook, overhand right combo by Simpson. Big shots by Simpson and Schafer is showing a lot of heart if nothing else as he keeps trying to walk forward. Simpson with another combo and Shafer shakes it off. Simpson with a huge flurry of punches to the body and now goes up to the head and somehow Schafer keeps coming forward. Every time Schafer throws a punch, Simpson drills him with a counter. Big overhand right by Simpson and Schafer’s legs buckle but he survives yet again. Right hand drops Schafer again and the round ends. 10-8 Simpson.

Round 3 – Simpson with a right hand and Schafer still hanging in there. It’s just more of the same but at a slightly slower pace as Simpson is controling the action but throwing fewer punches. Two more punches for Simpson. Overhand right by Simpson just blocked by Schafer. Big left hand sends Schafer stumbling backward but then he starts walking forward again. One more right hand and the round ends. 10-9 Simpson makes it 30-25 on my card.

Official Scorecards: 30-27 across the board, Aaron Simpson wins by unanimous decision. And yet again, judges are afraid to use 10-8 rounds.

Darren Elkins vs. Zhang Tiequan – Round 1 – Elkins throwing the right hand and Zhang answering with a nice combination. Zhang with a deep guillotine attempt. Elkins manages to get out o the choke. Elkins on top dropping punches and connects with a big right hand. Elkins keeps working solid ground and pound. Elkins passes to side control. Elbows from Darren now. Elkins with a neck crank attempt and he used it to get to mount but Zhang got half guard back. Elkins passes to mount and Zhang gives up his back. Rear naked choke attempt by Elkins, he gives it up and lands a flurry of punches. Elkins continuing to switch between choke attempts and punches. 10-9 round for Elkins.

Round 2 – Elkins with a slow shot and Zhang tries for the guillotine again. Elkins gets out of it and quickly ends up on Zhang’s back. Elkins with more punches from back control but Zhang does manage to get half guard back, althought Elkins passes right back to side control. Zhang manages to escape to standing. Elkins with the shot and gets the takedown during a half-hearted guillotine attempt by Zhang. Zhang briefly sweeps to top but Elkins quickly switches it right back. Elkins with more patient ground and pound to finish the round. 10-9 Elkins.

Round 3 – Right hand by Elkins. Zhang tries to flurry. Now Zhang with another guillotine attempt and this one is very deep. Elkins manages to survive and he’s on top yet again. Elkins just staying on top landing punches and he passes to mount again with ease. Now Elkins to the back and he looks for the choke and can’t get it. Elkins just punching away from back control as the round ends. 10-9 again. Zhang looked pretty awful.

Official Scorecards: 30-27, 30-26, 30-27 all for Darren Elkins.

Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic – Round 1 – Leg kick by Miocic. Miocic continuing to go back to the leg kicks with regularity. Miocic with the takedown and he was working to take the back but Beltran managed to get back to his feet. Beltran is coming up short with every single punch. Leg kick by Miocic. Right hand by Miocic lands well. Overhand right landing again. Leg kick by Miocic again. 10-9 Miocic.

Round 2 – Takedown by Miocic and he’s on top. Mioci with some ground and pound before Beltran gets up. Beltran trying to walk him down and gets a takedown. Beltran with a flurry of activity from top but he really only landed one punch. Miocic with another takedown and after a little activity Beltran gets back to his feet. Left hand by Beltran. Beltran pushing him into the cage and Miocic is holding on. Right hand by Miocic. Beltran with a few elbows. 10-9 Miocic in my book.

Round 3 – Takedown into full mount about two minutes in by Miocic after a period of grappling against the cage. Beltran stands up. Right hand by Beltran lands. They throw arm punches at each otherwith about 90 seconds left. Beltran stumbles to the ground, Miocic on top throwing short elbows. Back control by Miocic, and the round ends. 10-9 Miocic.

Official Scorecards: 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 all for Stipe Miocic. Stipe Miocic wins by unanimous decision.
