Yesterday word came out that Chael Sonnen has been suspended by California in a move related to Sonnen’s difficulties in Nevada. Sonnen actually had just completed his suspension but California re-suspended him. CSAC executive director George Dodd explains:

In explaining the suspension, Dodd indicated that Nevada has decided to uphold California’s ruling, honoring Sonnen’s current administrative suspension.

“It’s kind of like the (Antonio) Margarito hearing (in boxing), where we had him on an indefinite suspension. Each state can make a determination of what they want to do with him, but Nevada and a lot of other states work together, and they honor each other’s suspensions,” Dodd stated.

“They have chose to honor our suspension.”

The California State Athletic Commission originally ruled in December that Sonnen would be suspended for a total of six months with that suspension coming to a close in early March.

They claim that his suspension is based on both his felony conviction in Oregon and his possibly lying during his Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing.

Sonnen is 34 years old and his nonsense has caught up with him to the point that he may waste well over a year after his biggest fight without getting back in the cage. His peak athletic years are soon going to be in the rear-view mirror and he has to hope that the trend of grinding wrestlers who can continue to compete at a high level during their “old age” continues with him.
