MMA World Cup: Can a Boy Named Kim Do the Unthinkable?

Dong Hyun Kim grounded Paul Daley on his way to an upset win, making him the first lower seed to advance in the World Cup. Can he repeat the feat against one of the best, not just in the division, but of all time? Joining him in the semis is Thiago Alves who made short work of Zaromskis in the opening round.

1. Georges St. Pierre vs. 5. Dong Hyun Kim

My Take: St. Pierre may be the best fighter in the sport’s short history. Everything Kim can do, GSP can do better. I suspect this is a fight we’ll see down the road in real life. I think the odds will astronomically favor St. Pierre. It’s the smart bet, both in the World Cup and in the actual Octagon.

2. Jon Fitch vs. 3. Thiago Alves

My Take: Will the third time be the charm for Thiago Alves? No you say? No.And factor this into the equation: under World Cup rules, if Alves doesn’t make weight, he loses via forfeit. How will that wrinkle play into your vote?

  1. Canada: Georges St. Pierre
  2. USA: Jon Fitch
  3. Brazil: Thiago Alves
  4. Europe: Paul Daley
  5. Asia/AUS: Dong Hyun Kim
  6. CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States)/Assorted: Marius Zaromskis
