Host Dustin Green breaks down the week in combat sports by looking back at results from UFC 122, WEC 52 and the boxing mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.
We then take a look at UFC 123. Yours truly stops by to make predictions for the main and co-main events. I’m confident that Lyoto Machida will make Quinton Jackson miss, but I’m less confident about my pick of B.J. Penn over Matt Hughes. As I say in the video, Penn should never lose to Hughes. He waxed Hughes the first time they fought and was en route to doing that again in the rematch before the injury/fatigue set in. I’m not exactly confident with his preparation this time out nor with his mental state. There’s no debating the place where Hughes is mentally heading into this bout is superior to wherever Penn is. But on paper, Penn should never lose to Hughes. It simply should not happen. Penn is too well-rounded and has offensive opportunities in too many dimensions of the game.
But, of course, this is MMA, so Hughes stopping a Penn who simply didn’t show up to fight wouldn’t be much of a surprise either.
