There was no controversy this time. Frankie Edgar beat B.J. Penn with better execution of the gameplan he used in the first fight. Edgar straight befuddled Penn all night with in-and-out movement, takedowns, feints, takedown feints, speed, and volume. Penn looked disinterested from the time he entered the cage, and that disinterest turned into complete impotence by the final round.
FightMetric released their report late last night, and while there aren’t many surprises therein (the system did award Penn the first round), the numbers tell the tale. Here’s the stat summary:
Name | Total Strikes | Significant Strikes | Takedowns | Effectiveness Scores |
Edgar | 142 | 94 | 3 | 385 |
Penn | 56 | 36 | 2 | 203 |
Frankie Edgar’s performance speaks for itself. Masterful.
