The Week in Quotes: March 21st – 27th

THE WEEK IN MIR OR FRANK LIKES TO STICK HIS FOOT IN HIS MOUTH

“I made the Brock stuff out to more than I had to just to promote a fight. I’m pretty content and happy. If Brock’s in the future than he is.” – Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir, promoting a fight that didn’t exist. (Cage Writer)

“He’s one of the best versions of [Brock] Lesnar; a much more dangerous version.” – Mir, who couldn’t discuss UFC 111 opponent Shane Carwin without comparing him to foe Brock Lesnar. (Fight! Magazine)

“I see someone that wants to be an outcast from society and live up in the mountains and bullies people. That’s not me. So I guess yeah, I guess I have a problem with Lesnar.” – Mir, a self-admitted outcast and hailing from one of the most toxic cities in the world.  Also bullies people.

“But I’m not so much obsessed with Lesnar as a person, as I am with the techniques and positioning he used to beat me. And it’s an obsession that will do me well with this fight.” – Mir, who’s obsession failed him when Carwin shut his lights off dirty boxing in the clinch. (MMA Mania)

“My last couple of fights, I’ve shown that I use a lot of angles, throw punches in different areas, and I keep myself out of harm by using footwork. On my feet, I feel comfortable as long as I fight intelligently and use the fact that I have a lot more experience and use the range to my advantage.” – Mir, with famous last words. (Sports Radio Interviews)

LOGICAL FALLACIES FOR ONE HUNDRED, ALEX

“If I was to knock on 1,000 Ontario family doors and ask them for their top three concerns, I’d be surprised if anybody said, ‘Well, my top three, one of those is we’ve got to start this new kind of mixed martial arts in Ontario – that’s going to mean a lot for me and my family and our future together.'” – Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, suggesting that Canada only moves forward on issues Canadians have in their top three priorities. (Canadian Press)

“In ultimate fighting, you can tap out. I’m tapping out on this.” – McGuinty, sigh.

“It is violence for violence’s sake. And violence begets violence.” – MMA fans favorite New York Assembly Bob Reilly, with his usual shallow and pedantic views. (New York Times)

“[But if the sanctioning of mixed martial arts is not removed from the budget process] Then I will probably not vote against it. As this will only be a small part of the budget.” – Reilly

BROCKSMASH

“That was a business decision that the UFC had to make. Really, that belt is a make-believe belt to satisfy the company and to satisfy the people in the heavyweight division. I’m still the heavyweight champion.” – UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, who is now scheduled to unify his big shiny belt with Shane Carwin’s make believe paper champ belt on July 3rd. (MMAFighting.com)

“I dislike Frank — there isn’t an opponent in the Octagon that I really truly like. That’s the battle of competition.” – Lesnar, would have made a fantastic Norse god.

“If Shane Carwin is a better version of Brock Lesnar, then the fight’s over in the first 30 seconds — I feel bad for Frank.” – Lesnar.  It took four minutes and Shane Carwin is no Brock Lesnar.  And I don’t think Brock’s shedding a tear for Frank, either.

OUTPATIENT BRAIN SURGERY

“If it’s true it can be career-ending.” – UFC President Dana White, talking about Thiago Alves failing a CAT scan due to “brain irregualities”. (TMZ)

“I went and saw a specialist this morning who told me I need to have the minor procedure.” – Alves, who will be going through some sort of “outpatient brain surgery” and will be back training within 2-3 weeks.  Also, can anyone explain why TMZ is breaking UFC medical stories? (TMZ)

…AND NOW FOR THE MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING

“If I was to fight right now the Georges St-Pierre that fought Thiago Alves last time, I would beat him before the end of the fifth round. I would submit him or I would knock him out.” – UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, who couldn’t finish Dan Hardy, but could finish himself from a year ago?  Maybe if he’s greasing.  Hey oh! (TSN)

“[E]verything we’ve done has been going from bad positions.” – Dan Hardy, on his training for GSP.  Ended up being pretty useful. (MMA Mania)

“I heard like ‘click, click.’ It was completely extended.” – St-Pierre, on a first round arm bar that almost finished the Brit. (MMA Mania)

WHITE NOISE

“It’s over man, this whole we don’t want want to fight each other thing is over.” – UFC President Dana White, wanting to put a Jon Fitch/Josh Koscheck fight together.  Good luck with that. (Bloody Elbow)

“I was all about doing [a St. Pierre vs. Silva] fight until I saw Anderson move up to 205.” – White, forgetting that Silva can still make 185. And not wanting to lose his budding crossover star to Silvarape. (Las Vegas Sun)

“I’m trying to get into China. I don’t need anti-Chinese government stuff on my fighters.” – White, on scrubbing Dan Hardy’s stomach tat off UFC 111 promo posters.  Giant penises on the chest are just fine. (TSN)

“We did this deal and now I gotta figure out what I’m gonna do with him and how I’m gonna do this thing.” – White, on what to do with James Toney.  You’re foolish if you have any doubts this deal was done just to keep Toney out of Scott Coker‘s hands. (Watch Kalib Run)

“I was never putting an April 17 show on.” – White

“I’m gonna build a bad-ass, nice, clean place up in Summerlin where people can take their kids and have a blast on the weekends” – White, about to become the bowling alley proprietor. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

PARTING SHOTS

“I think referees standing fighters up too soon is one of the dumbest things that has been done recently. They need to let the fighters work on the ground, and not be so quick to bring the fighters back to their feet.”Jon Fitch, ironically stood up by Dan Miragliotta for this very reason days later. (Bleacher Report)

“It was really weird as Dan was quick to break up the action but he seemed to let Frank get punched longer than necessary. Maybe he is just a big Mir fan.” – Shane Carwin.  Seems more likely that he was a Mir hater? (Fox Sports)

“There’s no way possible a world champion [boxer] in his prime can be beat by an MMA fighter, no matter how good they are.” – James Toney
