UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy – Live Results and Commentary

 As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy.  The live blog will start with the beginning of the Spike broadcast (at 9PM ET) though the PPV event so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event. 

As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.

The Spike Broadcast is live.  First fight up shortly

Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Brown – Round 1– Brown pushing forward and thwoing a body kick.  Almeida shoots in and gets a body lock.  Brown defending Well as Almeida switches to a single.  Now Almeida with a trip and he’s on top.  Brown Working to use the cage to stand up, but Almeida uses the trip again to get down.  Brown stands up again and lands an elbow.  Almeida with two punches and shoots in again but Brown still defending well.  About thrre minutes of Almeida occasionally getting takedowns and doing nothing before pushing against the fence.  They’re restarted nin the center of the ring and again Almeida shoots for the takedown.  Right hand by Almeida and again he can’t finish the takedown.  Almeida pushes back, lands two punches and body locks again.  Almeida openss up and lands a few punches as the round ends.  10-9 Almeida.  Round 2 – Brown misses a kick and then lands a leg kick.  Double leg for Almeida and Brown scoots back to the cage and stands up.  Another takedown from Almeida andh’es in side control, now landing a few punches.  Brown escapes to standing and now turns Almeida against the cage before getting spot around again.  Almeida pushing in for the takedown still and they’re restarted.  Almeida lands a counter and Brown slips so Almeida pounces with another punch and as Brown scrambles Almeida takes his back.  Scramble again and now Almieda has a body triangle and sinks in the rear naked choke for the submission.  Ricardo Almeida wins by submission (rear naked choke), round 2.

Nate Diaz vs. Rory Markham – Round 1– Diaz lands a punch and eats a leg kick.  Diaz using his length well early  as Markham is having trouble getting close.  Right hand by Diaz lands.  Diaz has gone for a few takedowns but hasn’t been able to finish.  Another few right hands land for Nate and he’s doing extremely well early.  Nice combinations by Nate now and a knee that drops Markham.  Diaz looking to take the back and gets both hooks in.  Diaz flattens him out with a body triangle and is teeing off with punches now.  The fight is stopped and that was absolute dominance by Diaz.  Nate Diaz wins by TKO (strikes), round 1.

Jim Miller vs. Mark Bocek- Round 1 – Bocek lands a right hand and shoots in for the takedown. Miller looking to control the head to prevent it.  Bocek can’t get the fight to the floor and is pushing Miller against the cage again.  Miller with a knee to the body and they separate.  Bocek shoots in now and gets the double leg to get the fight to the floor.  Miller looks for a gogoplata and Bocek avoids and looks to pass the guard.  Miller looks for a kimura noand gets a sweep with it, now looking to finish but settles to be on top in the full guard of Bocek.  Miller with a diving elbow and the round comes to an end.  I’d say 10-9 Bocek based on early control but Miller really took over at the end.   Round 2 – Quick double leg by Bocek and he is in half guard now passing to side control. It’s a real positional struggle here and Miller grabs a leg looking for a finish but Bocek rolls and is back on top, now passing to full mount.  Elbow and Miller rolls out but Bocek takes his back with both hooks in.  Body triangle from Bocek and he traps one of Millers arms with it.  Miller working hard to defend the neck with only one arm.  Miller tries to stand up and slam his way out of it but can’t and the round ends.  10-9 Bocek again and I think Miller needs to finish.  Round 3 -Uppercut from Miller and Bocek is bleeding pretty badly from by his eye.  Miller is trying to push forward and land strikes but Bocek is circling away.  Bocek with a jab that lands.  Low kick by Miller.  Bocek pushing in, looking for the single leg.  Now Miller looking for the double but he can’t get it and gets turned back against the cage.  Bocek finishes a single leg now and is briefly on top before Miller takes his back in a scramble.  10-9 Bocek I guess making it 30-27 on my card.  Official Decision: Jim Miller wins by unanimous decision.  I guess I can see it.

Jon Fitch vs. Ben Saunders – Round 1– Left hand by Saunders and he is swept briefly by a low kick.  Saunders has the Thai clinch briefly and lands a knee to the body.  Fitch looks for the takedown and Saunders defends well.  Fitch now uses a body lock to get the fight to the ground.  Fitch working with punches from the top.  Grinding body work by Fitch still.  Saunders can’t really find an escape. Saunders now looking for a triangle or armbar but can’t finish it.  Saunders lands an upkick as Fitch stands over him so Jon comes back down and lands some more punches and elbows.  10-9 Fitch as the round ends.  Round 2 – Fitch with a low kick and now a high kick and Saunders misses one of his own.  Fitch with a single leg attempt and then pushes forward into a body lock against the cage and finishes a takedown.  Fitch just grinding away from the top.  Fitch in half guard working with punches and elbows.  They’re back to standing and now Fitch looking for the takedown again.  The round ends.  10-9 Fitch again. Round 3 – Right hand by Fitch.  Saunders misses a head kick.  Now Fitch grabs a single leg and Saunders is looking to grab an arm but just stands back up.  Fitch pushing forward again landing punches and going for a single leg.  Saunders throws a kick and Fitch takes him down.  Fitch just sitting on top landing his typical grinding punches and elbows, not a whole lot to write about here.  Nice elbows now by Jon.  Fitch really flurrying as the round comes to an end.  10-9 Fitch for the clean sweep on my card.  Official Decision: Jon Fitch wins by unanimous decision.

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Fabricio Camoes – Round 1– Camoes looking for the quick takedown and Pellegrino is able to get an underhook and stop it.  Camoes pushing him into the fence.  Takedown by Pellegrino and now Camoes takes his back.  Pellegrino is standing with Camoes riding his back looking for the choke and landing punches.  Camoes gets the choke sunk briefly and Pellegrino looks to shake him off.  NOw Pellegrino has his back and moves to mount before getting pulled into the full guard.  Pellegrino now in side control and Camoes looks for a choke but Pellegrino escapes into full guard.  Pellegrino now to half guard and landing a few punches.  The round ends and it was a 10-9 Pellegrino round on my card but very close.  Round 2 – Pellegrino with the takedown and again.  Full mount by Pellegrino now and he’s landing elbows now but Camoes escapes the mount.  Pellegrino avoids Camoes scrambling to his feet and starts landing punches.  Camoes turns his back and Pellegrino sinks the choke and gets the submission win.  Kurt Pellegrino wins by submission (rear naked choke), round 2.

Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin – Round 1 – Carwin charges for the takedown after about 40 seconds.  Mir’s back against the cage and Carwin landing short punches.  Mir staying calm and taking short punches to the face as he can’t get his back off the cage.  They’re restarted and we’re now further into the fight than Carwin has ever been as a professional. Again Carwin pushes Mir’s back into the cage and starts working short punches.  Carwin with huge uppercuts and Mir goes down.  Carwin landing a ton of big shots now and Mir goes limp.  Dan Mirgliota lets Mir take five more huge punches after he was clearly out and finally stops the contest.  Shane Carwin wins by KO, round 1.

Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy – Round 1 – Left by GSP and then a quick double leg that puts Hardy’s back on the mat.  Hardy looking for full guard and can’t get it.  Hardy tries for mission control but from half guard it doesn’t work.  St. Pierre passes to side control.  Hardy gives up his back and GSP takes it.  One hook in, now both.  George tries for an armbar, Hardy escapes and is on top for all of a second before they’re up and then GSP takes him right back to the mat and into half guard.  Hardy keeps coming close to getting full guard but Georges just keeps pulling one leg out to remain in half guard.  Full mount by St. Pierre now.  Again Hardy gives up his back.  Both hooks in now.  Slick transition to armbar and Hardy rolls through to escape.  Beautiful job getting out of a deep armbar.  10-9 St. Pierre.  Round 2 – No real action for the first minute except pawing punches by Hardy. Quick shot by GSP and he get the takedown with ease.  Quick pass to side control for Georges.  Knee to the body by GSP now and some punches to the stomach.  Georges goes for the back, Hardy scambles and is now on top in Georges’ full guard.  GSP hip escapes back to standing.  Right hand by Hardy just misses.  Leg kick by GSP.  Right hand by GSP lands flush.  Another big double by GSP and Hardy is now looking to work his legs up high and the round ends. 10-9 GSP again.  Round 3 – GSP ducks under a right hand and uses a quick takedown again.  St. Pierre ends up back in Hardy’s full guard.  GSP standing up and trying to throw strikes downward with power.  GSP just keeps grinding awa from on top.  Now GSP standing and delivering hard shots.  Hardy is pawing at his eye, may have gotten poked.  Hardy throws up a triangle but GSP just muscles to side control.  Georges looking for an armbar now but Hardy uses good movement to avoid. Hardy manages to stand for a second and gets taken right back down.  Again GSP takes the back and Hardy is able to stand up but gets swept back to the ground.  The round ends and again 10-9 GSP.  Round 4 – Guess how the round started?  Takedown by GSP.  Full mount now.  Again GSP takes the back.  Hardy briefly looked like he may roll to a kneebar but instead is on the bottom again.  GSP has a very deep kimura now and there is no way Hardy should get out of this, but he does.  That was an awful looking kimura and Hardy just gutted through it.  The round ends and it’s 10-9 GSP again.  Round 5-Hardy with a leg kick and now Georges with one of his own.  And another takedown.  Triangle attempt by Hardy just leads to him giving up side control.  Now GSP going for the kimura agian but can’t finish it.  Georges just hanging out on side control landing punches and elbows.  The round ends and it’s 10-9 GSP to give him a 50-45 win on my card.  Official scorecards: 50-43, 50-44, 50-45 all for Georges St. Pierre.  Georges St. Pierre wins by unanimous decision.
