-I hate to start off the recap with my usual commentating rant, but Joe may have put in his worst color job to date. I watched the fight with one casual fan and three non-fans, and Joe was the butt of several jokes throughout the card. Joe disappointed from his orgasming over Nate Marquardt’s final minute to putting a quick end to Mark Coleman’s verbal sparring with Tito Ortiz.
-With that out of the way, Randy Couture showed why he’ll be remembered far longer and far more fondly than Mark Coleman. Couture evolved with the game; Coleman went as far as his wrestling would take him.
-I’m not one to tell a fighter to retire, but Coleman’s got a tough decision ahead of him in the coming days.
-When Anderson Silva gets by Vitor Belfort, we’ll have a couple months of awesome sound bytes to work with.
-Nate Marquardt looked in trouble early in round one. Sonnen put him in a position he never had to deal with, and Nate didn’t have any answers for it.
-Another non-fight issue…the UFC needs to deal with the Yahoo internet stream. I watch all the cards with Yahoo and on more than one occasion I’ve had to consume the card via alternate means. If Zuffa wants to snuff out illegal streaming, they need to fix their current offerings.
-Which leads me to the Swick/Thiago fight, of which I missed the first round. From the highlights, it looked like Thiago continued to make strides with his striking which led to the finish.
-Demian Maia’s striking looked improved, though he still has a long way to go. It was nice to see him able to win a fight without an ability to get the fight to the floor when he wanted, though he’ll still have a lot of trouble with the better strikers at 185.
-Frank Trigg looks just about done. He looked slow and stiff, and Serra did what Serra does. Land one big right hand. With numerous other career ventures, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trigg hang up the gloves.
