Toby Imada didn’t just pull off a swank submission. When he wrapped Jorge Masvidal in an inverted triangle choke, he gave fans a reason to watch an experimental niche promotion that aired on a niche foreign-language cable network. Only the hardest of the hardcore saw the submission “live” on Bellator’s weekly ESPN Deportes show, but Imada’s brilliance spread like wildfire through the MMA community by means of new media giant Youtube.
Other challengers popped their heads up, but the specter of Imada acted like a Whac-a-Mole hammer throughout the year. The final voting became a mere formality.
