Jamie Varner put it best in the post-fight interview: S— happens.
Varner looked sharp from the opening bell, after nearly a year out of the cage healing a hand injury. Benson Henderson matched Varner step-for-step, providing a very close two rounds. Varner looked to be the more technical fighter, using his boxing and wrestling to outpoint Henderson in the opening periods.
And then it ended oh so quickly.
In the opening minute of round three, Henderson stuff a takedown and locked Varner’s neck in a guillotine. Henderson quickly jumped into guard, and before Varner had a chance to react and defend, he was forced to tap.
Varner continued to cultivate his heel persona following the bout, complaining that he came to fight while Henderson came to grapple.
