Late Night Fights is a new feature here at Bloody Elbow where most nights we will provide a single fight to be enjoyed and discussed by our community members. These fights may be from way back in MMA’s history, they may showcase a new prospect or they may feature a classic moment in the sport.
Tonight we go back to the Bas Rutten Invitational 4 (August 14, 1999) where a young Yves Edwards (6-2) took on an even more inexperienced Nate Marquardt (3-0). The fight took place in the first round of an 8 man tournament.
Also of note: the fight featured the debut of eventual UFC heavyweight title challenger Gan McGee who scored a first round TKO over UFC vet Sam Adkins. Adkins last fought in 2007, ending his career with a 7-20-2 record. But those 20 losses include names like McGee, Don Frye, Tank Abbott, Travis Fulton, Kevin Jackson, Dan Severn, Ricco Rodriguez, Guy Mezger and Ken Shamrock.
But we’re here for the video, so let’s get to it:
