Former WEC lightweight champion “Razor” Rob McCullough will face off with contender Marcus Hicks at WEC 38 on Jan. 25 in San Diego, Calif., MMAWeekly.com has learned.
Sources close to McCullough’s camp confirmed the bout on Tuesday.
McCullough is coming off a hard-fought decision loss to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at WEC 36 on Nov. 5, in a bout to determine the lightweight division’s next contender to champion Jamie Varner’s belt. Varner and Cerrone will square off on the San Diego card.
Hicks last fought in August at WEC 35, where he lost by devastating knockout to champ Varner. Hicks had won his previous three appearances in the WEC, beginning with WEC 27, without seeing a third round.
It’s a nice fight for two guys who need to get a high profile win to get their careers back on track. I’m a big fan of Hicks and legitimately thought that he would beat Varner in their bout…I was obviously wrong. However, I think he has the ground game to beat McCullough in January but I’m not sure what there is left for Rob in the WEC were he to lose again.
Regardless, Varner/Cerrone, Pulver/Faber and Hicks/McCullough. WEC is going to be delivering another show full of very solid fights again in January.
