The bout will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on the eve of Super Bowl XLII.
“It’s an interesting matchup,” said UFC President Dana White. “Lesnar is a great wrestler, a good athlete, and this is definitely gonna be a big test for him. Frank Mir is a former world champion who is coming off a big win over Antoni Hardonk, and he’s looking to get his career back on track while Lesnar’s looking to walk into the UFC and prove what type of fighter he’s gonna be by trying to knock him off.”
Very interesting match-up. Mir can obviously sub Lesnar, especially given Lesnar’s lack of experience with super technical heavyweights with good guards. Brock Lesnar is certainly no Pe de Pano.
That being said, Pe de Pano is also no ground and pound specialist, yet was able to obliterate Mir with very basic top control attacks. And unless I’m missing something, ground and pound is how Lesnar is likely to win this match up. So on the face of it, it’s not clear how this will play out. So little is known about Lesnar that figuring out this match-up is becomes an act of idle speculation. Mir hasn’t been fighting like himself since his return to action after his motorcycle accident, but swears that now – after finally giving himself time to recover and relearn post accident – he’s back. His dominating victory overt Hardonk is ostensibly proof of Mir’s rearrival.
Nice matchmaking, though. Very nice, indeed.
