Easy choice, folks. Andrei Arlovski vs. Brandon Vera. UFCMania’s got the 411:
Grumblings about the showdown surfaced during a meet-and-greet with Arlovski over the weekend in Ontario, Calif. We were unable to confirm or deny this rumor with the manager for “The Pitbull,” Keith Gelman, at the time of this writing.
If this fight were to happen – and it by no means is anything certain – it would be absolutely incredible. Not only would the fight itself be enormously entertaining, but it would reveal an incredible amount about a) both fighters and b) the heavyweight division at large.
Questions have circled both Arlovski and Vera, albeit for different reasons. Arlovski is enormously marketable, but has had inconsistent performances over the past two years. Vera has all the promise in the world, but has yet to be tested AND hasn’t competed recently. One would like to think both have a decent chance at becoming the UFC heavyweight champion, but they both bring so many interesting issues to the table that one just never knows.
This is a fight built on physicality, meaningful match-making, and something missing in most fights today: intrigue.
Thumbs up to Joe Silva if he can make this happen.
