Sean Sherk, who will be defending his UFC Lightweight title on Saturday against Hermes Franca at UFC 73, recently noted how hard it is for others to submit him. Notable quote:
“He went for a couple of guillotine chokes,” says Sherk. “But I had my arm in. When that happens, really it’s just a matter of staying calm and letting the other guy burn his arms out. I got a 23 inch neck, so it’s going to be really hard to finish me with a guillotine.
Nick Thompson – BodogFight Welterweight Champion and teammate of Sherk – has been adamant for years about Sherk’s submission defense and ground game. Two years ago Thompson said Sherk was a high-level brown belt or low-level black belt. If that assessment is at all true (and I’m inclined to think it is), then he’s got to be a black belt level no-gi grappler at this point. This, my friends, is the reason why he won’t be submitted by Hermes, despite the Brazilian’s first-rate jiu-jitsu.
